Upcoming Classes

The instructors of all classes will be Thomas Leroux and David Rostenne, founding members of the Bytown Mac User Group, with the aim to "get people comfortable enough to work effectively with their computers".

All the classes take place at the Routhier Community Centre, located at 172 Guigues Avenue just north of the Market area (Google Map).

Students are encouraged to bring their Macs or iPhones to follow along.

Introduction to Macs

May 25th, June 1st and June 8th (Tuesdays), 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Price: $185 (+GST)

This class covers the physical computer itself, a guided tour of the Mac interface, the Desktop, Menus, key System Preferences, the Finder, using CDs, DVDs, & USB keys, and a brief discussion about organizing and finding files. The second night we will be introducing Safari along with some useful plugins, iChat, Skype, discussing online safety, Preview, Address Book, and Time Machine. And on the third night, the Dashboard and its many widgets, managing your email with Mail.app, organizing your life with iCal, using iTunes to play music and videos, a quick introduction to the iLife and iWork suites of programs, and trouble-shooting.

Introduction to iPhone

May 22nd, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Price: $90 (+GST)

This one-day class is covers the differences between the models of iPhone, a brief discussion about phone and data plans, sync and iTunes settings (Windows and Mac), backups, creating an iTunes account, iPhone settings, accessory suggestions, a tour of some of the default applications such as Safari, Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Clock, Maps, and others.

We will spend time going through the App Store and offering suggestions for various apps, and answering questions. Much of what this class will cover applies to the iPod Touch and iPad.

Payment can be by either cash, cheque or by paying with your credit card (by clicking one of the Pay Now buttons above). Receipts will be emailed when payment is received. If you would like to attend only one night's class, arrangements can be made.

By Bus:

Take any bus that goes to the Rideau Centre, and from there it is a 10-15 minute walk (East on Rideau to Dalhousie, turn left (North) onto Dalhousie, continuing down to Guigues Street (there is a Bridgehead on the corner), or take the number 3 bus and get off at the corner of Guigues and Dalhousie. You can use OC Transpo's handy travel planner.

Driving:

From the Queensway/417, take the Nicholas Street exit, and turn right (East) onto Laurier Avenue. You will cross the Transitway, past a pedestrian crossing to the next light, which is Cumberland Street where you will turn left (North) onto Cumberland. Drive down Cumberland crossing Rideau street, Murray street and St. Patrick street. The entrance to the Community Centre's parking lot is just past the St. Patrick intersection on the left (West) side of the road.
